Even a slight force can cause a broken bone. Fracture victims often feel the bone break or hear a snapping sound.
There may be intense pain and tenderness - especially when there is pressure on the area of the break-with swelling and discoloration; the limb may look deformed or oddly angled. But swelling and pain may not occur for some time and many fractures are impossible to detect without an X-ray. If any of these symptoms are present, however, assume there's a fracture and seek medical help.
While awaiting treatment
Steady and support the injured limb.
If an ankle or foot is fractured, carefully lifting the leg will help to reduce the swelling and therefore the pain.
If bone has pierced the skin, cover the wound with a dry, clean dressing
