To prevent this major cause of tooth loss, clean your teeth after every meal and at bedtime with a soft, rounded, nylon-bristled brush; work up and down, keeping the bristles at an angle to the gum line. Start brushing at a different place every time you clean your teeth. Always use a fluoride toothpaste, because it will help to prevent tooth decay.
If you can't brush your teeth after every meal, brush twice a day and preferably at night immediately before going to bed.
Ask your dentist for advice about using dental floss to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth.
Massage your gums regularly with a toothbrush or a clean fingertip to stimulate blood flow.
Eat a low-sugar diet.
If your gums bleed, are swollen and sore, or contain pus, see a dentist immediately.
