Insect bites

To relieve the itch of a mosquito or other insect bite, apply an ice pack or ice cube for 10 minutes. Let the skin dry, then smooth on an over-the-counter hydrocortisone or antihistamine cream.

If the bite is especially itchy, swollen or uncomfortable, or if you have many bites, take antihistamine tablets. But if you have to drive or operate machinery, make sure you use tablets which do not cause drowsiness.

Some people have a physical reaction to insect venom that at its most extreme takes the form of anaphylactic shock. If the victim's breath is laboured, he is dizzy and his skin bums, call a doctor immediately.
