For quick relief, rub calamine lotion or witch hazel on the itchy area.
If skin is not broken, apply a cooling lotion made from 4fl oz /115ml water, 4fl oz/115ml surgical spirit and 3-4 drops oil of peppermint. Store in a tightly capped bottle and shake well before using.
For all-over relief, crumble 2oz/ 60g uncooked oatmeal into lukewarm bath water as it flows from the tap. Be careful getting in and out of the tub - it will be extremely slippery. Soak for 15 to 20 minutes and then gently pat yourself dry so that a thin coating of oatmeal remains on your skin.
For itchy, dry or chapped skin, a mineral oil bath ( 2-3floz/60-85ml per tub of lukewarm water) or a salt bath (2-4oz/60-115g per tub) works wonders. (Mineral oil or salt will also make the tub slippery, so be careful getting in and out.)
