If you feel an ache coming on, shrug your shoulders several times.
Take a hot shower, letting the spray hit the back of your neck for 10 to 15 minutes.
While reading or watching TV before bedtime, rest your neck against a cushion.
Using your fingertips, knead the back of your neck from the earlobes down to the shoulders; lightly massage the vertebrae. Finish off with brisk chopping movements, using the little-finger side of your flat, stiff hands-but not too hard.
Exercise your neck. Stand or sit upright with your arms relaxed, or lie flat on your back with your knees bent. Slowly turn your head to the right as far as you can without feeling strain or pain; hold for 5 seconds, then turn to the left. Repeat the exercise five times.
