Sore throats

  • Avoid irritation - if you smoke, take the opportunity to stop.

  • To numb the pain, make this icy honey-lemon drink: squeeze the juice of one lemon into 4fl oz of water and mix in plenty of honey or sugar; add lots of ice, stir well, and sip through a straw.

  • Other soothers: gargle with 1½ teaspoon of salt in 8floz of water three times a day, or suck specially prepared throat lozenges.

  • Keep the mucous membranes moist by drinking plenty of non-alcoholic liquids.*Take aspirin or paracetamol to relieve pain.

See a doctor if you have a fever of 38.5°C or higher for more than a day or two, if the pain persists for more than a week, or if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing.
